I don’t want to dwell on this topic too much as I don’t want to sound like a broken record (as if I don’t already) but, these comments yesterday after the President Obama – Prime Minister Netanyahu meeting made by Saeb Erekat, the top Palestinian negotiator, summed up my thoughts on the matter succinctly:
The question to Mr. Netanyahu is, ‘How can I govern myself while your occupation continues everywhere in the West Bank and Gaza, and how can I govern myself under your wall, roadblocks and settlement activities?'”
I mean come on, do we really expect peace without justice? Do we really expect peace without the basic recognition of the rights of sovereignty?
The Israeli government for their part, is correct when demanding that their right to exist be recognized by all the affected parties, however that cannot be a pretext or better yet a means to ignore their role in the process as well.
The biggest problem is neither side is ready to do what is necessary. Hamas, the Palestinians, and Muslims in general need to give up the ghost on this issue and realize that Israel is here to stay. Let it go, recognize the fact and let’s move on. Israel has to realize that an occupier and/or one who encroaches on the sovereignty of another, does more to increase risks and security issues, not decrease them.
If I were Israel, I would pull out completely to internationally recognized and agreed upon boarders and then close them completely. That way safety would be guaranteed as no one from Palestine will even be let in to Israel, their will be two separate states side by side, and the pressure to open up the boarders can be manipulated to include stipulations that include recognition of Israel and the Palestinian governments understanding that they will be held accountable for the actions of their citizens if they attack Israel.
This way no one can complain, two states will exist, the Palestinians wouldn’t have to worry about Israel as they will be inside their own borders, and more importantly, we will see truly the hearts of the Muslims, as it will manifest itself through contributions or the lack their of, to the soverign Palestinian government toward their infrastructure.
